Que la paix soit avec vous
Ivan literally changed my life. My Father (Graham Thompson Sr) was a member of the Barrington Council. That's how I met Ivan. I remember my Father introducing Ivan as a man who has forgotten more than most know. He respected Ivan greatly, as I learned to.
When my Father passed, I moved with my Mom to Hemmingford. At the time, I didn't know many people. Ivan was a gracious host when I stopped by periodically. He was kind to this lost soul.
On one visit, he said to me "shouldn't you be in school or working?" I think that was the last time I spoke with him. My distance was not out of anger. Rather, it was out of a degree of shame. Ivan was right. I was 23 at the time and needed to grow up. At this very moment, he was the Father that I no longer had. He was the one to give this young man the push he needed. My Father would be proud of his fellow council member.
Since that day, I went on to McGill University, married the love of my life (Hemmingford's own Lynn Anderson), pursued a successful career and have had 4 boys of my own. I often ask myself "What would Ivan say?" when confronted with the suboptimal actions that young men tend to perform.
Ivan was a great man. my life is better having known him, no matter how briefly. When I grow up, I hope to be like Ivan.
With my greatest respect,
Graham Thompson
