Ian Strachan was born and educated in Aberdeen, Scotland. After graduation he completed a great deal of research regarding the fishing industry. Then in 1964 he met a small man with a bow tie, named Joey Smallwood who was seeking out “bright young men” for his new fisheries institute in some place known as Newfoundland. Ian Strachan moved to Newfoundland and then in 1969 arrived in Nain, Labrador to develop the fish plant there. This was the beginning of a long future for Strachan in Labrador. Ian Strachan did many great things over the years in Labrador including serving as Liberal MHA for Eagle River district in the Newfoundland & Labrador House of Assembly from 1975 to 1979. Ian has been known to be a businessman, farmer, biochemist, adventurer, amateur writer, and founder of several businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador and Hemmingford, Quebec. Mr. Strachan also contributed to Newfoundland and Labrador through his involvement with a number of organizations including as Labrador Director on the Fishing Industry Advisory Board, and on the Newfoundland Housing Corporation. Ian was also President of the Labrador North Chamber of Commerce, first chairman of the Combined Councils of Labrador, Executive Director of Mokami Project Group, first editor of the Inuktitut/English newspaper Kinatuinamot Illengajuk, and Labrador Director on the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
Ian died on Sunday March 3rd, 2024 in Chateauguay, Quebec at Anna Laberge Hospital following a long cancer illness. He is survived by his wife, Merrill, daughters Ella (Craig) and granddaughters Taryn and Taylor in Goose Bay, Labrador; Iona and granddaughters Amelie and Aila in Yellowknife, Northwest territories; Kate in Ottawa, Ontario and Isla and grandson, Lennox in Goose Bay, Labrador.

Ian Strachan est né et a fait ses études à Aberdeen, en Écosse. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme, il a effectué de nombreuses recherches concernant l’industrie de la pêche. Puis, en 1964, il rencontra un petit homme avec un nœud papillon, nommé Joey Smallwood, qui recherchait des « jeunes hommes brillants » pour son nouvel institut des pêches dans un endroit connu sous le nom de Terre-Neuve. Ian Strachan a déménagé à Terre-Neuve, puis est arrivé à Nain, au Labrador, en 1969, pour y développer l’usine de transformation du poisson. Ce fut le début d’un long avenir pour Strachan au Labrador. Ian Strachan a fait beaucoup de grandes choses au fil des années au Labrador, notamment en tant que député libéral du district d’Eagle River à la Chambre d’assemblée de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador de 1975 à 1979. Ian est connu pour être un homme d’affaires, un agriculteur, un biochimiste, un aventurier et un écrivain amateur et fondateur de plusieurs entreprises à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador ainsi qu’à Hemmingford, au Québec. M. Strachan a également contribué à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador grâce à son implication dans un certain nombre d’organisations, notamment en tant que directeur du Labrador au Conseil consultatif de l’industrie de la pêche et à la Newfoundland Housing Corporation. Ian a également été président de la Chambre de commerce du Nord du Labrador, premier président des Conseils combinés du Labrador, directeur exécutif du Mokami Project Group, premier rédacteur en chef du journal inuktitut/anglais Kinatuinamot Illengajuk et directeur du Labrador à l’Agence de promotion économique du Canada atlantique.
Ian est décédé le dimanche 3 mars 2024 à Châteauguay, Québec, à l’hôpital Anna Laberge des suites d’un long combat. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse Merrill, ses filles Ella (Craig) et ses petites-filles Taryn et Taylor à Goose Bay, Labrador; Iona et ses petites-filles Amélie et Aila à Yellowknife, dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest ; Kate à Ottawa, Ontario et Isla et son petit-fils, Lennox à Goose Bay, Labrador.
