Sylvia Allain 1932-2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sylvia Allain on Friday, June 12, at the age of 93. She died peacefully, surrounded by several family members. Pre-deceased by her husband, Grant Van Vliet, and several siblings, she leaves her sister Raymonde (Claude Bélair), several nieces and nephews, stepchildren, and many friends.

Following a fulfilling career as a teacher, Sylvia enjoyed her retirement to the fullest, spending most of her time with her sister, the late Jocelyne Carroll (late Walter Carroll); niece, Wendy (Don Jung); and great-nephew, Owen. She enjoyed visiting family and friends in New Brunswick every summer. For fun and exercise, she took up square-dancing, where she met her husband. They spent their winter months square-dancing in Texas, and Sylvia enjoyed sewing her dancing dresses.

The family thanks the staff at Ste. Anne’s Hospital and at St. Mary’s Hospital who cared for Sylvia while she was hospitalized with a pelvic fracture the past ten weeks.

Since Sylvia was fiercely independent into her nineties, the family suggests that those who wish to make a donation in her memory should consider HelpAge Canada, which supports local grassroots projects across the country that tackle isolation, deliver essentials, and help older adults age with dignity.

A private burial will take place at the Burtonville cemetery in Lacolle.

May peace be with you

To Sylvia’s family, please accept my heartfelt condolences. Our families connected when my dad, Grant and Sylvia came together and I am grateful for the happiness she brought my dad during the last twelve years of his life. Their time together was filled with companionship, laughter, and a sense of comfort he cherished more than words can capture. She gave him joy, stability, and friendship in a chapter of life when those gifts mattered profoundly.

In the end, she held my dad as he passed, giving him love and presence in his final moments. Knowing he wasn’t alone, and that he was held by someone who truly cared for him, is something our family will never forget. It was an act of profound tenderness.

Sylvia was also a wonderful friend to our family. She welcomed us into her world with such generosity — sharing stories, kindness, and even some of her special recipes, like her mock millefeuille and broccoli soufflé. Those small but meaningful gestures showed the warmth of her spirit and the way she connected with people through care and creativity.

I lost touch with Sylvia in the last few years, and I am sorry to hear she spend 10 weeks in care. That would have been difficult for her given her independence.

We are thinking of all of you as you navigate this loss, and we share in honouring the beautiful, vibrant, and generous woman she was.

May peace be with you

Well Sylvia this is sad sad news. Our last visit together was when I came out to visit my mum and I went to see you for that wonderful dinner you made. We even had pickles. I had a glass of wine and you had a martini. Just the both of us. I always loved seeing you and Dad and know it was not often. But this last time Dad was already gone. I knew Dad was happy with you and I am grateful for that. Sounds like you had a fun life till the end but by now you probably have found Dad so you will enjoy your time together again. See you again…
