It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Mohamed Osman of Hemmingford, QC on July 27, 2019 at the age of 82 years. He will be deeply missed and forever in the hearts of his family; his devoted wife Mrs. Silvia John, his children Mona (April), Karim, Brigitta (Peter), his grandchildren, his brother Mounir (Magda) and sisters Reda (late Adnan), Nahed (late Salah), and many other relatives and great friends.
Born on August 10, 1936 in Cairo, Egypt he completed his undergraduate degree there, and then continued his studies in Zurich, Switzerland at the prestigious Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) where he earned his doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering. Zurich is also where he met his future wife, Silvia. He immigrated to Canada in 1966 with his beloved Silvia and then married her that same year in Toronto. He continued his career in Montreal for many industrious years that encompassed teaching, researching, publications, and the supervision of many graduate students at Concordia University. His career also included various consulting projects, including being part of one of Canada’s most famous robotic and technical achievements, the first Canadarm or the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (SRMS).
He was honoured, recognized, and appreciated for his 29 years of service and contributions to the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science and retired as Distinguished Professor Emeritus in June of 1996 from Concordia University.
He will be remembered fondly by his family and friends for his love of a spirited debate, deep intellectual curiosity for many subjects, and when given the opportunity, as being the life of the party. We will miss you tremendously, Sam!
A private service and burial was held on August 1, 2019.
